National Chicken Boy Day – September 1, 2022, history, quotes
National Chicken Boy Day on September 1 celebrates the statue of Chicken Boy, a man with a chicken head. Located on Avenue 56 at the top of Future Studio, Chicken Boy has been a prominent fixture for ten years and counting. Standing at 22 feet tall and holding a bucket of chicken, Chicken Boy was originally a promotion for a fast food restaurant based in Los Angeles.
I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL CHICKEN BOY DAY
Amy Inouye and Chicken Boy are a modern-day love story. When the artist moved to Los Angeles around 40 years ago, one of the first things she saw was the statue of Chicken Boy. A promotional gimmick for a fast food restaurant in Downtown Los Angeles, the mascot was designed and named after the 1960s Chicken Boy Restaurant. The iconic figure remained at the restaurant until 1984 when the owner of the place died. When Inouye inquired about the statue, the restaurant owners said she could take it if she liked, and so she did.
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…

For about 20 years, the statue remained in storage, after which Inouye decided to display Chicken Boy on top of her art studio located in Highland Park. The local community assisted in restoring Chicken Boy. Part of the reason for installing Chicken Boy in her studio was to supplement the catalog of chicken-related novelty items that Inouye had collected over the years and offered for purchase. These items are available at a mini-museum for all Chicken Boy fans to see.
With a chicken head and bucket of chicken in his hands, the statue of Chicken Boy is made of fiberglass and stands 22 feet tall. He is jokingly referred to as the “Statue of Liberty of Los Angeles,” and is a must-see for all along Route 66.
It is never too late to be what you might have been.
